Fiscally, I am a conservative. Most Social issues, very Liberal. This is why I never talk politics with strangers as I will inevitably make someone angry.

Jack with the NDP is a great guy. I just don't want him near our Economy. Iggy, seems like a two face. Harper seems competent but his position on marijuana, his Bill S-10 - and dreams of new prisons - scares me to death.

Hey Conservatives. Everyone is against crime. Just define crime for us. A cool old hippie, his arthritic wife and thier grandson live down the alley from me. Everyone knows what is in his greenhouse. I don't want to see him hassled by the Police and the Crown. I don't want to see him in a new fancy prison.

Health Canada

It has been a while since I have posted. Family and a work place injury has occupied most of my time. I do try and keep in form.

Great news from CBC, April 13 2011. An Ontario Judge gave Health Canada 90 days to change some of their procedures or Marijuana will be essentially be legal this summer

The whole issue is complicated and could not articulate my feelings and opinions on a quick blog post. Some people have dressed up Health Canada as some evil monster. In my personal experience, Health Canada has always been very respectful and considerate.

I suspect the Conservatives have underfunded Health Canada making it difficult for staff to process applications in a timely manner. Further, laws and procedures are always evolving leaving staff working in a perpetual grey zone. They are faced dealing with some really difficult patients and dodgy designated growers.

That said the Judge is right. There are problems and one of the biggest problems identified are the "gate keepers", the doctors and the prescriptions.

Okay blame the Doctors. No. The people who should be blamed are the Health Boards that put pressure on Doctor's not to sign Health Canada paper work. They are intimidating the Doctors.

Health Canada should take these Health Boards to court. What these so called Mederical professional organizations are doing to Doctors and suffering individuals is criminal.

Tommy Chong is Calgary's most famous medical marijuana activist. Born in Edmonton and raised in Calgary. Started his music career while at Western Canada High School and played his first gig at the Legion #1. Tommy went on to become a global celebrity.

I once won a bet with a Brit who did not believe Tommy's Dad was Chinese and his Mom, Caucasian. Think about that. It was not legal for Tommy's Dad to vote back when his son was born. It is nice to know that stupid and ignorant laws eventually do change.

This is a huge case for Medical Marijuana. Buddy down in Michigan is a licenced medical marijuana patient. He works for Wall Mart. Wall Mart has drug testing and a zero tolerance policy. Buddy tests positive for marijuana, gets fired and turns around and sues Wall Mart.

Legalization opens up a huge can of worms. Right now technology does not exist to test for THC and determine when the last time it was consumed. One day ago, a week ago, thirty minutes ago?. Should the Pilot or School Bus driver be permitted to operate their vehicle with THC in their system?.

Does the right of the medical marijuana patient trump the rights of other human beings or the right of a company to offer safe and secure working conditions for all humans?

This is why I push for decriminalization rather than full on legalization. Decriminalization is possible right now. People can have the option of medicating with marijuana without the political hacks and doctors scared of medical boards standing in the way.

Full legalization opens up a host of other problems. Further, does anyone really want marijuana produced and distributed by huge conglomerates, monitored by government bureaucrats?

An interesting article at the Montreal Gazette about a guy with MS who could not get a Saskatchewan doctor to sign for a medical marijuana prescription. He eventually tried to commit suicide. Finally, a compassionate doctor signed and his marijuana treatments have helped improve his quality of life considerably. Part II is here.

I just don't understand a doctor's downside to prescribing a medicine that has brought comfort to millions of people through out history and no deaths.

His name is Ross Rebagliati. He was the first ever to win an Olympic gold medal for snowboarding at the 1998 Winter Olympics. He tested positive for marijuana but was allowed to keep his gold medal as marijuana was not a banned substance.

Some medical doctors do not believe in the medicinal benefits of marijuana for some conditions. The trouble is, why fight it? The best athletes in the world use marijuana with no determent to health. So why would you not prescribe something with no serious side effects? No one has died from marijuana yet people die every year from aspirins. I never tire of looking at old marijuana propaganda movies, books, public announcements, posters and etc. Usually, there is some subtle racism. Of course the devil is a Black guy. The girl is always a white girl in a submissive position in relation to the Black guy. The department (Health Canada) is also hiring eight compliance officers across the country to monitor licensed users and growers, the document indicates. Bergeron says five have already been hired, and the rest - for Ontario and Alberta - will be hired shortly. The officers have the authority to make site visits and alert police to problems.

I was not aware Health Canada had had compliance officers to monitor growers and users. This is needed to keep the criminals out of the medicinal marijuana community.

It's bad enough that the Obama administration has decided to put a peaceful Vancouver resident in a cage like an animal for five years for selling marijuana seeds.

It's worth noting that Emery received this punishment for doing something that was deemed perfectly legal in Canada and for which he paid taxes.

What's more appalling is that Emery has been tossed into solitary confinement. Do they want him to die in prison? Will that give them pleasure?

Ultimately, President Barack Obama and his cold-hearted attorney general, Eric Holder, should be held accountable by the public.

The decision to toss Emery in the hole makes it pretty obvious that the U.S. president, a so-called former professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago and a former president of the Harvard Law Review, really doesn't give a damn about civil liberties.

Two scientific studies have completely destroyed the myth that marijuana is a gateway drug. It isn't and normal people understand this.

I would argue that unthinking people who continue to push the gateway theory are exposing medical marijuana patients to great risk. Marijuana and say, cocaine are not the same but often the same people sell it. Some patients go underground to get their medicine and are exposed to the a group of people who are into crime on a very different level.

Growing up in Calgary my stereotype of marijuana users were hippies. My American friend's stereotype of users were Blacks. When you meet someone suffering from MS who medicates and responds well to Marijuana - all stereotypes are shattered. It is a nice feeling.

AMA, Medical Marijuana Position Change?

Journal of the American Medical Association 1934:

"If cannabis is taken to a point of intoxication during labor, what effect will it have on labor and on the newborn child?"

The AMA's consultants replied:

"... Its chief effects are on the central nervous system. There is a mixture of depression and stimulation similar to that occasionally seen under morphine. Soon after its administration the patient passes into a semiconscious state in which judgment is lost and vivid dreams occur. The sensation of pain is distinctly lessened or entirely absent and the sense of touch is less acute than normally. Hence a woman in labor may have a more or less painless labor. If a sufficient amount of the drug is taken, tile patient may fall into a tranquil sleep from which she will awaken refreshed. Some degree of tolerance for this drug is rapidly acquired and death from acute poisoning is rare. As far as is known, a baby born of a mother intoxicated with cannabis will not be abnormal in any way." This opinion, of course, is subject to qualification today. The effect is not similar to morphine, and tolerance is not acquired.

Despite comparable ranges of scores on all depression subscales, those who used once per week or less had less depressed mood, more positive affect, and fewer somatic complaints than non-user.

Philosophically I understand and love Libertarians. I find myself drifting towards the party but still cannot wrap my head around how a Libertarian government would work in Canada. I am for smaller government and more personal freedom. But how small of government? How much personal freedom?

I have not given up on Government but I have no party to vote for. Liberals are like the big jack rabbit that eats in my garden. I dislike the rabbit. It takes things that don't belong it. I build a fence but the rabbit feels entitled - he still sneaks in and steals. But I won't kill the rabbit, it is just life.

The current federal conservative government is like a big mean dog who snaps at my children, kills anything that enters the yard and steals food from other dogs. She is going for the needle.

Russell Barth wrote into the Times making some some accurate observations about the state of problems facing medical marijuana patients in Canada.

...there is much about this medical pot program that the government refuses to talk about, and it has been an ongoing fiasco for over a decade.

The Health Canada program is so scandalously understaffed that there is now a 24- to 30-week wait for applications to be processed (whereas it only takes a few weeks to get a gun). Simple renewals take 16 to 20 weeks.

The pot grown by the government is weak, ground up, is full of stem, seed, leaf, and chemicals. It doesn't even look like pot, it looks like the stuff you sprinkle on the floor to soak up vomit...

4 things not not say to a Medical Marijuana patient.

1) “You’re refusing to leave puberty and enter adulthood. When I grew up, I stopped doing childish things, like using DRUGS.”

2) But what kind of an example are you setting for “the kids”?

3) Can you get me some good pot?

4) Is pot your only concern? Why don’t you talk about something else, for a change?

Another well preserved antique bottle of Cannabis Medicine. I sometimes bid on these at ebay but the price always moves to high. It is amazing the price of cannabis and marihuana antiques and memorabilia.

It is amazing to think that prior to the Democrats criminalizing cannabis in 1937 it is estimated every single house hold in America had a product derived from Cannabis / Hemp.

The American Medical Association back in the 1930's recognized the use of Cannabis for the treatment of 14 different ailments.

Government propaganda against Cannabis will be studied for years to come.

Some compassion clubs are fronts

The other day the Montreal Police busted three compassion clubs. Guess what - they probably had it coming. The problem with a few compassion clubs is they are little more than a front for dealing pot.

While most don't start out this way they slowly drift to being less discriminatory in who they accept for customers er.. I mean patients. Maybe they have too much stock. The rent and electricity bills are past due. They need new staff....etc.

Some compassion clubs are run by people who are already heavy into pot culture and recreational use.- which is cool but - it is not the same as medicinal marijuana. There are patients with real medical needs that are treated by cannabis.

Some growers and compassion clubs forget about their patients. They have little regard for the medicinal community and use it as cover thus putting everyone under a dark shadow.

Society, including the Police, Crown and Municipalities, become justifiably suspicious. Ultimately making it more difficult for growers to get patients their medicine.

I have no objection to anyone smoking pot and campaigning for it's legalization. Just don't hide behind the medical community like a common thief. Have some respect for your fellow suffering human beings.

Pythium or Algae?

Many medical marijuana growers in Canada are moving away from hydro to soilless. I am not sure which is best - often a growers preference. But I think most people moved away from hydro as the potential algae problems can be maddening and costly. I just read an interesting article in the September 2009 issue of Maximum Yield by Paul Foster, "Pythium or Algae: Have you been misdiagnosed".

Selfish Medical Grower in B.C.

Out in BC a Health Canada licenced grower just got busted with 1,744 plants - that was probably, at least, 1650 plants over his limit. What an selfish man.

Some people feel no responsibility to the Medical Marijuana community in general and specifically, the patients that need the medicine. They cast a dark shadow over the whole medicinal community making general society understandably suspicious.

Every time a grower does something stupid and or illegal it puts Health Canada in a difficult position. It gives the municipalities good reason to make it very hard, if not impossible, for people to legally grow in their own homes. Again, ultimately hurting the people who need their medicine

The March Police raid of the compassion club, CALM (Cannabis as a living medicine) really highlights the legal grey zone in which clubs operate in Canada. It also highlights the risk some patients are exposed to in purchasing their medicine. In the surveillance video Police came armed with their night clubs drawn.

Dr. Chris Cavacuiti, a family physician at St. Michael's Hospital said "Until recently, it seemed the authorities were looking the other way".

Marijuana Girl is now a cult classic. It was written under the pseudonym of N. R. de Mexico. My guess the pseudonym Mexico juxtaposed with the white girl is a play on racism. "Joyce Taylor would try anything - if it promised a thrill".

I don't believe it is an anti-marijuana book per se. It used it's readerships suspicion of Mexicans and their association with marijuana and played it against a general disapproval of race mixing - all to sell books. This genre partly inspired Hunter S. Thompson's gonzo journalism

Most people feel a little paranoid when they buy at their local hydro hobby supplier and with good reason. Down in the States....

Police this morning swooped on 35 businesses and numerous residential addresses throughout the country as search warrants were executed as part of 'Operation Lime'.The two year operation targeted businesses and individuals responsible for the commercial sale of equipment used in the growing of cannabis.

Over 100 commercial cannabis growing operations linked to the businesses were also found and dismantled during the operation. A further 19 have been discovered today so far.

I would like to know how the police qualify a commerical operation. Be safe.

Dr. William Courtny's website is a great resource for Medical marijuana information. Dr. Courtny is a bit of a radical and not popular with some medicinal users. He believes the healing properties of Cannabis is not necessarily in the THC but in other cannabinoids (CBD).

I can imagine how popular a cannabis strain devoid of THC would be with some medicinal users. Others of course would welcome the pain relief without the "high". Interesting - a debate that will never be settled.

Recently, societies tolerance for marijuana as both medicinal and recreational drug has greatly increased. I am interested in old propaganda posters and exploitation films.

I never knew the Reefer Madness actually started out as church financed movie called, "Tell your Children". It was purchased by producer D. Esper who re-cut the film for the exploitation film circuit.

Looking back at 1930 American propaganda posters and movies one can find the seeds of intolerance.

Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency in Cannabis

Rust colour patches and/or yellowing or whitening of the leaves because of decreased amount of chlorophyll is often a result of disease or nutrient deficiency. Lack of Magnesium is a chronic problem in Cannabis plants and might be the culprit.

I read a great post at the Marijuana & Cannabis Blog addressing this problem and offering solutions.

My only objection to the otherwise great article is the author's unwavering faith in the sales guys down at the hydro hobby shop ... "Go to the shop for expert advice. They specialize in this crop and have the right products available".

My advice would be to do your homework first, then go down with an open mind. Is the shop busy or slow every time you go down. Gauge the sales people's experience - are they botanists or high school students? Remember the huge margins in nutrients and supplements provide a perfect motivation to over sell and over promise.
